Dustin Poirier is known as one of the best strikers in MMA. The former interim lightweight champion has also faced some great strikers himself.
Wars against Justin Gathje, Conor McGregor, Dan Hooker, and Max Holloway have all helped shape his striking in MMA. Dustin Poirier's faced a good number of opponents with impressive punching power.
He did an interview with Patrick Bet-David in front of a live audience. There was a question that eventually came up about which of his opponents had the most punching power.
“Conor McGregor, no doubt about it,” Dustin Poirier said (transcription via MMA News.) [You’d put Conor McGregor at the top?] As the biggest puncher, I’ve fought? Yeah. He’s a special individual, for sure… Fought him in 2014; lost, and that was when his trajectory was just… sky was the limit, he was on his way up. He tore through everybody; became a two-weight world champion.”
That was followed up with questions of their trilogy coming to an end in 2021. Dustin Poirier was asked if the power was still the same today as it was in 2014.
“Still the same; very dangerous. It’s just, I felt differently mentally going into it [2021 rematch & trilogy].”
The two fights in 2021 were very strange ones. Dustin Poirier knocked out Conor McGregor in January using a series of calf kicks and pressure.
The trilogy was then booked for July with the two men expected to end things once and for all. Conor McGregor would break his ankle after Dustin Poirier dominated the first round.
Their time as opponents appear to be over as Dustin Poirier is fighting Charles Oliveira for the lightweight belt at UFC 269. Conor McGregor does not have another fight booked.
