Chris Martin reveals Coldplay will record three more albums before they STOP releasing music altogether

Coldplay frontman Chris Martin has revealed the band is planning to retire from recording music once they have released twelve albums.

Ahead of the launch of the ninth LP, Music of the Spheres, the lead singer, 44, admitted the band will only make another three records afterwards before quitting the recording studio for good.

He told Absolute Radio’s Andy Bush: 'I think that in a few albums time we will finish making albums. This is not a joke, this is true, I think after 12, that will be the end of our catalogue.'

However, he insisted that the Paradise hitmakers won't be hanging up their microphones for good, as the singer is keen for the band - also made up of Guy Berryman, 43, Will Champion, 43, and Jonny Buckland, 44 - to play live shows into their 70s.

'But I think we will always want to play live together. So, I think in the way that the [Rolling] Stones do, it will be so cool if we can still be touring in our late 70s,' he said.

'That will be wonderful, if anybody wants to come.'

Chris also admitted it was a 'real joy' to team up with K-pop sensation BTS recently on the recent track My Universe.

He added: 'It's just been a real joy to do that song with them from start to finish.

'It was such a weird idea, and it was so wrong on paper in a way, but it allowed us to bring out our inner boyband and them to bring out their inner old man band and collaborate in a middle-aged band.'

'They hope it will help keep the next generation of fans': Coldplay are 'gearing up to release a surprise Selena Gomez collaboration in order to attract younger audience' (pictured in 2011)

It follows reports that the Grammy winners have recorded a new track with singer Selena Gomez in a bid to reach a younger fan base.

Ready for release imminently, the upcoming single is said to be called Let Someone Go and will allegedly feature on the new album.

A source told The Sun: 'Chris has always been a huge fan of Selena and it's a dream come true that she's finally singing on a Coldplay record.'

They went on to claim that the Paradise hitmaker wrote the single specially for the former Disney Channel star, and they have a 'special live performance' scheduled.

'He wrote a beautiful ballad for her which they recorded together in April.

'She is massively popular with young people so the group hope that collaborations like this will help keep the next generation fans of the group.'

Chris recently said his band's new material was inspired by Star Wars, after he watched the movies and was left wondering what music on other planets sounds like.

Speaking on The Zach Sang Show, he said: 'One time I was watching Star Wars and they had the scene with the Cantina band right?

'And I was like: "I wonder what musicians are like across the universe?" and that led to this whole thing and now here we are.'

New release: The band have released the song titles for their album Music of the Spheres which is released on October 15

In the music video for Higher Power, the band perform on the planet of Kaotica, which is 'populated by robot dogs, giant holograms and a street-gang of dancing aliens'.

And Chris confirmed the whole album will be set on the fictional planet.

He added: 'It led us to imagining this whole other place called "the spheres", which is like a group of planets, like a solar system with lots of different places and creatures and stuff.

'And what I found is when you've imagined a place like that, you can sort of become any artist within that.

'It's a very freeing thing to take yourself out of Coldplay and just think: "OK, I'm not even human, what does music sound like?"'

The hitmaker also revealed the upcoming record could be one of the last that Coldplay releases, as he doesn't think the band have much time left before they 'stop making albums'.

He explained: 'I do know how many albums we have left as a band and it's not that many before we're gonna stop making albums, I think.'

Representatives for Coldplay and Selena Gomez have been contacted for comment by MailOnline.

Record: Chris and the band posted about the album on Instagram with a note alongside an album trailer which combines an animated cosmic journey through the album's planetary artwork with short clips of the album's 12 tracks (pictured in 2021)
