Erling Haaland has received a stern reminder from Borussia Dortmund teammate Mats Hummels on his future amid interest from Man City and Man United ahead of next summer's transfer window.
Hummels, who has played for both BVB and Bayern in his career, told Haaland that a change of scenery doesn't always work out and that staying at Dortmund could be the best decision:
“I would fully understand him wanting to stay because things are really great in Dortmund, because he knows what he has here. I have far from given up hope that he will stay for a long time,” Hummels told Sport Bild.
“The grass is not always greener on the other side. You really have to be aware of that in football.
“It’s worth a lot if you have a good environment, feel comfortable with the guys and can also be really successful.
“You have to value that, that’s not a given at every club. So we have a lot to offer to Erling Haaland.”
Hummels absolutely has a point, but Haaland has nothing left to prove in the Bundesliga. He's been absolutely clinical during his time with the club, scoring 47 goals in 48 league appearances. In the Champions League, the Norwegian won the Golden Boot last season after hitting the back of the net 10 times in eight matches.
Erling Haaland is drawing serious interest from about every single European giant, but City and United have emerged as the frontrunners, for the time being. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer used to coach the Dortmund talisman at Molde, while his father, Alf-Inge Haaland, played at Man City.
Erling Haaland's release clause will drop to around €70 million euros in the summer of 2022, but he is under contract at Signal Iduna until 2024. It's hard to believe him staying for that long, though. Haaland's unique combination of size, speed, and skill would undoubtedly fit perfectly in the Premier League and he's already proven that he can score goals just about anywhere.
It will be very interesting to see where Erling Haaland ends up, but Hummels evidently believes there is a chance he remains at Dortmund.
