It's official — D'Eriq King's season is over.

Miami's star QB, who was expected to lead the Hurricanes (2-3, 0-1) to one of the best records in the Atlantic Coast Conference, has decided to have season-ending shoulder surgery after seeking several medical opinions to find other options.

It will be up to second-year freshman Tyler Van Dyke to lead the offense against North Carolina, another disappointing team in the ACC Coastal division. The Tar Heels (3-3, 2-3), led by ACC Preseason Player of the Year Sam Howell and ranked in the top 10 to start the season coming off an Orange Bowl appearance last year, have been inconsistent so far. Their latest loss, last Saturday's upset by then 1-4 Florida State, came one week after UNC routed Duke.

The 'Canes had a bye last weekend and haven't played since a gut-wrenching Thursday night loss to Virginia on Sept. 30 on a missed field goal by Andres Borregales. In that game, Van Dyke threw for 203 yards and 1 touchdown while also running in for a score of his own. Junior running back Cam'ron Harris also rushed for a couple of TDs.
