In day three of the new National Hockey League season, a division champion from last season beings their season against a team a few years removed from Stanley Cup glory, as the Florida Panthers get set to take on the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Last season, the COVID-altered realignment, the Florida Panthers were one of the best teams during the regular season, taking second in the Central Division. However, after a rough and physical series against the eventual Stanley Cup Champion Tampa Bay Lightning, the Panthers bowed out in the first round. Now, they have a slightly re-tooled roster, with the goal of getting up towards the top of the Atlantic Division.
Pittsburgh had a tough opening series against their division rivals in the New York Islanders last season, also losing in the first round of the playoffs. Now, they look to bounce back with a slightly older roster, missing two of their stars at the beginning of the season, with captain Sidney Crosby day-to-day recovering from surgery, while Evgeni Malkin is out indefinitely, also recovering from surgery.
While the two teams did not play last season as their respective schedules saw them only play division teams, they met three times during the COVID-shortened 2019-20 season, with the Panthers winning two of the three meetings.
