David Tennant responds to Russell T Davies' Doctor Who comeback

Doctor Who fans recently got the exciting news that Russell T Davies will return to the series as showrunner in 2023.

Davies led the revival of the show back in 2005, with Christopher Eccleston in the titular role before David Tennant took over in the second series.

Speaking recently to Digital Spy, Tennant – who can next be seen in the BBC's Around the World in 80 Days – shared his excitement to see Davies return to the helm.

"I'm so thrilled that Russell is going back to it and to see where he's going to take that story," he said.

"There isn't a Doctor Who brain like his in the country, on the planet, in the universe, so as a fan of the show, to know where that's going to go next, is hugely exciting."

Series 13, which premieres in just a couple of weeks (October 31), will be the last for current Doctor Jodie Whittaker, before she hands back the TARDIS keys for good following a trio of specials next year.

But with the next Doctor yet to be revealed, Tennant also suggested he would "never say never" to the idea of returning to the show in the future.

Tennant already returned to star alongside Eleventh Doctor Matt Smith for the show's 50th anniversary, and rumours are already flying about him returning again for the 60th anniversary. That would be just two years away, in 2023 – the same year Davies is due to reprise his role.

When we asked who he wanted to step into Doctor Who's shoes – or if he already knew who would be – he teased: "Imagine if I started saying... No! Even if I did, and I don't, I wouldn't say anything!"

Of course, the Tenth Doctor actor hasn't left the Doctor Who universe entirely, as he has already continued his iteration's adventures in Big Finish audio dramas and teamed up with Whittaker for the game Doctor Who: The Edge of Reality, which was released today (October 14).

For now, Tennant's fans can watch him travel the globe in Around the World in 80 Days, which is coming soon to BBC One.

Doctor Who airs on BBC One in the UK. In the US, the show airs on BBC America, with series 1-12 available on HBO Max. Doctor Who: Flux (aka series 13) will premiere on October 31.
