Rick Jeanneret to call 20 games in final season as play-by-play voice of Sabres

Buffalo, N.Y. (WGR 550) - Rick Jeanneret's final season as the play-by-play voice of the Buffalo Sabres will begin Thursday night.

The Sabres officially released the schedule of the final 20 games of Jeanneret's broadcasting career in Buffalo, starting with the 2021-22 regular season opener against the Montreal Canadiens at KeyBank Center.

Jeanneret will also have the play-by-play action of the Sabres' weekend matchup with the Arizona Coyotes on Saturday in Downtown Buffalo before taking nearly a month off until his next broadcast on Nov. 13.

The 79-year-old Jeanneret announced back in August that the 2021-22 season would be his last season in the broadcast booth for the Sabres. He has been calling games for the Sabres since the 1971-72 season, starting out as the radio voice of the team.

Among the notable honors Jeanneret has earned throughout his career includes an induction into the Sabres Hall of Fame in 2011, and an induction into both the Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame and Buffalo Broadcasting Hall of Fame in 2012.

Also in November of 2012, Jeanneret received the Foster Hewitt Memorial Award recognizing "distinguished members of the radio and television industry who made outstanding contributions to their profession and the game during their career in hockey broadcasting." This also meant an induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto.

Faceoff on Thursday night is set for 7 p.m. ET with pregame coverage on WGR starting at 6 p.m. ET with Mike Schopp and the Bulldog.
