A tech investor and former donor to Hillary Clinton who backed the failed Newsom recall is unabashedly hosting a fundraiser for Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis later this month.
David Sacks, a Craft partner and former executive for PayPal, explained why he is a fan of DeSantis when asked on Wednesday by Emily Chang, host of Bloomberg TV’s Bloomberg Technology, why he is supports “such a divisive candidate” after citing the governor’s “questionable” choices regarding the coronavirus pandemic.
“In terms of why I like DeSantis, he was the first governor to stop these insane lockdowns. He found the right policy on lockdowns, which was to stop them, despite a hostile media,” Sacks said.

Sacks also pointed out during the interview that he has supported and donated to candidates on both sides of the political spectrum.

Filings on the Federal Election Commission website indicate Sacks donated nearly $40,000 to Hillary Clinton‘s 2016 presidential campaign, $50,000 to Mitt Romney’s 2012 presidential campaign, $10,000 to the Democrats during the 2018 midterm elections, and $11,200 to WinRed, the Republican digital fundraising arm, during the Senate runoffs in Georgia that culminated in early January, according to SFGATE.
Sacks sent donations towards the recall initiative against Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom, who was facing backlash for his COVID-19 restrictions, according to state and local donations data.
The fundraiser for DeSantis is set to take place on Oct. 22 in San Francisco, California, according to a tweet from Sacks. Tickets for the event run between $2,500 and $25,000.

Speculation as to whether DeSantis, who has drawn the spotlight this year for his opposition to stringent COVID-19 measures and vaccine mandates, might consider a presidential run for 2024 has run rampant this past year, and he performs at the top of the GOP list of potential contenders in polling, particularly when former President Donald Trump is not considered.
The governor turned down rumors about a presidential bid on Sept. 7, calling them “manufactured” and “nonsense.”
