Texas Republican Sen. Ted Cruz is no stranger to controversy.
And controversy is what his Wednesday night event in Madison produced.
The event, sponsored by Young America’s Foundation where former Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker is president, abruptly moved from the UW-Madison campus to the Masonic Center after the university denied an exception for Cruz and his co-host to be maskless during the event.
"The bottom line is that often helps us get curious students to come to these events, and when they come they get to hear things they don’t ever hear," Walker said in an interview with WISN 12.
The Wednesday night live taping of Cruz's podcast "Verdict with Ted Cruz" was originally scheduled on campus.
Walker said the group was denied an exemption for Cruz and Knowles to be maskless.
The university insisted the group knew of and previously agreed to the policy all along.
"Look, I would still rather be on the university campus," Cruz said in an interview with WISN 12. "The point was to go there, but at the same time, I don't run away from it. If they want to play the heavy-handed censor, I’m gonna call them out on it."
The Masonic Center said guests would be required to wear masks at the event but not everyone did.
The series is part of a nationwide tour organized by Young America's Foundation.
Cruz will appear at Texas A&M Thursday night.
