Andy Reid wanted Josh Gordon to play more vs. Bills

Word that Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Josh Gordon would be part of the game plan against the Buffalo Bills broke early on Sunday morning. Then the game happened, and Gordon played only nine offensive plays — or 10% on the night.

But as Chiefs head coach Andy Reid explained on Wednesday, that was never the plan.

“He did good,” said Reid of Gordon, who caught his only target for 11 yards and a first down. “If we hadn’t gone into the hurry-up mode, he would’ve had more. I was thinking somewhere around 20 plays to get him in, and he got nine, but we also jumped into the hurry-up late in the third quarter, so it cut him off of some plays there. But I like the progress he’s making.”

The Chiefs being down multiple possessions in the game ruled out Gordon, whose grasp of the offense is still a work-in-progress. As it stands, the 6-foot-3, 230-pound receiver is likely ahead of schedule.

Reports in late September — when he was signed to the practice squad — said that it would take weeks for the call-up, but he appeared in his second game. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes continues to like what he has seen from the receiver.

“I think as he gets more accustomed to our offense and how we run it and how we do things, I think you’ll see him get utilized more and more over time,” said Mahomes. “His skill set is something not a lot of people have in this world. To be that big, that fast, that strong so I think as you get more comfortable – and you see this in receivers all the time, when they start trusting that what they’re doing is the right thing, in that offense you’ll see him make more and more plays.”

If 20 plays was the goal against the Bills, that should be the minimum expectation for this weekend against the Washington Football Team.
