Giants-Rams injury news: Daniel Jones cleared to play Sunday

Giants’ quarterback gets OK from independent neurologist

NFL: New York Giants at Dallas Cowboys Tim Heitman-USA TODAY Sports

New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones, recovering from a concussion, has been cleared to play on Sunday against the Los Angeles Rams.

Jones has been progressing through the league’s concussion protocol. He was a limited (non-contact) practice participant on Thursday. He went through a full practice on Friday and was then cleared by an independent NFL neurologist.

Jones is not even listed on the team’s final injury report. Neither are wide receiver Sterling Shepard or safety Jabrill Peppers. Those two have missed time with hamstring injuries. That means all three are expected to play.

“Obviously, Daniel is a critical part of this team,” head coach Joe Judge said. “He’s done a good job. He’s improved consistently throughout his time here. He’s obviously playing at a high level for us right now. He’s doing a lot of things to facilitate the offense. He has great command of the line of scrimmage. This guy does a lot of things in terms of making plays, extending plays. He’s made plays with his legs, with his arm. I can continue to see this guy progressing within his craft, his profession. So, in terms of getting him on the field, our goal is to have all of our players at the game and have everybody healthy.”

Left tackle Andrew Thomas (foot) is questionable, meaning he is 50-50 to play or not play. Wide receivers Kadarius Toney (ankle) and Darius Slayton (hamstring) are also questionable.

THURSDAY

New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones appears to be making a stunningly quick recovery from the concussion he suffered Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys, and reports from East Rutherford are that it seems more likely than not that Jones will be cleared to play this Sunday against the Loa Angeles Rams.

Jones took first-team reps during the open portion of Thursday’s practice, a positive sign in his recovery.

Head coach Joe Judge sounded optimistic he would have his starting quarterback in the lineup on Sunday.

“I’d say at this point, everything looks positive,” Judge said.

Offensive coordinator Jason Garrett also seemed optimistic in regards to Jones’ availability.

“We’ll see. We’ll see,” Garrett said. “He seems like he’s doing fine, and he seems like himself, so we’ll just take it day by day.”

WEDNESDAY

New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones put his pads on, went out to practice on Wednesday and tossed the football around a bit before the Giants officially began practice, perhaps a hopeful sign as Jones works his way through the NFL’s concussion protocol.

Giants head coach Joe Judge was in the middle of telling assembled media that Jones was “with the trainers” and “can just observe today” when it was pointed out to him that the quarterback, in the concussion protocol after Sunday’s helmet-to-helmet hit with Jabril Cox of the Dallas Cowboys, was on the field in full uniform tossing the ball around. Here was his reaction:

Here is Jones tossing the ball around before practice.

Jones reportedly also did some running and took snaps on a side field while technically just “observing” practice.

Below, the league’s Return-to-Participation Protocol:

If Jones doesn’t play, veteran backup Mike Glennon will start at quarterback.

Beyond Jones, the 1-4 Giants have a lengthy injury list heading into Sunday’s clash at MetLife Stadium with the Los Angeles Rams.

Barkley, Golladay won’t play

Star running back Saquon Barkley (ankle) and wide receiver Kenny Golladay won’t play.

Barkley was carted to the locker room Sunday with an ugly left ankle injury that caused a massive amount of swelling. Dr. David Chao, a former NFL team physician known as the Pro Football Doc, believes Barkley could miss as many as three games.

Golladay, signed to be the Giants’ No. 1 receiver, could reportedly miss two games.

More updates — Shepard “ready to go”

Wide receivers Sterling Shepard and Darius Slayton, who have each missed two games with hamstring injuries, practiced on Wednesday. Safety Jabrill Peppers, who missed Sunday’s game with a hamstring injury, also practiced.

Shepard seemed optimistic after practice.

“I feel great, I feel great. Ready to go,” he said.

Starting left tackle Andrew Thomas (foot) did not practice. Neither did starting left guard Matt Skura (knee).

Cam Brown back to practice

Second-year linebacker Cam Brown has been designated to return from IR. Brown, on injured reserve since Sept. 25 with a hamstring injury, practiced on Wednesday. Brown has not played since he participated in 11 special teams plays in the season opener vs. Denver.
