The Sunnyside Grizzlies used a dominant second half to take down the Eisenhower Cadets Friday night 44-14.
Myles Newhouse led the way with 168 yards rushing and 4 TDs while Logan Rodriguez threw for 211 yards and a score.
Coach John Lobbestael says they need to clean up a few things, but overall he’s happy with the win. “Devin Escamilla scored a touchdown and our whole team is really happy about that. That was a lot of fun.”
Escamilla has been battling injuries much of his high school career but was visibly emotional after finding the end zone.
The game got quite chippy with nine unsportsmanlike penalties between the two teams.
“I was out there talking to one of our players about an injury and their players and coaches were yelling at me to get off the field,” Lobbestael said. “I don’t want it to get chippy but I’m glad we got out without anyone on our team getting thrown out.”
One Eisenhower player was ejected from the game.
Both teams battled defensively in the first half with the Cadets intercepting two passes, the Grizzlies one as Sunnyside led 17-7 at the midpoint.
The crowd then enjoyed the homecoming festivities with a celebration of the court, the class of 1997, along with Sunnyside cheer and dance teams.
The football team was then assessed a penalty for not coming out of the locker room on time and then after a Griz three and out, the Cadets scored their final points of the game to pull within 17-14.
From there, a series of Ike mistakes, combined with an effective rushing attack from Sunnyside equaled 27 unanswered points for the home team.
This Friday the Grizzlies take on the other undefeated team in the Big 9, Moses Lake who surprised many in the league by beating Eastmont Friday night 21-13 in East Wenatchee.
Kickoff will be 7:00 p.m. at Lions Field.
