WASHINGTON (SBG) — Amid the growing NFT market, ViacomCBS is also throwing its hat into the ring and will soon be allowing fans to buy NFTs (non-fungible tokens) based on the company's brands.
Partnering with tech group Recur in a multi-year deal, ViacomCBS will be creating an NFT platform to sell digital collectibles that will launch in the spring of 2022, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Drawing from its grand library of classic films and TV shows, the platform will allow consumers to buy NFTs from brands like Nickelodeon, MTV, BET, CBS, Comedy Central and more.
This potential means fans could buy NFTS of their favorite shows and movies like Rugrats, South Park, The Godfather, Friday the 13th, Transformers among others.
“Fueled by beloved characters and iconic properties with multi-generational appeal, we are thrilled to accelerate our consumer products presence even further into the growing metaverse,” Pam Kaufman, president of ViacomCBS Consumer Products, told TechCrunch. “In teaming up with Recur to create an NFT platform dedicated to ViacomCBS IP, voracious collectors and first-time NFT buyers alike will find unique opportunities to own a piece of their favorite franchises."
“ViacomCBS is one of the first major media and entertainment companies to enter the metaverse in a significant way. We are so excited to welcome them into the ecosystem with this partnership," Co-CEOs of Recur Trevor George and Zach Bruch told Deadline. "Our chain agnostic approach will provide fans the widest range of utility as well as unprecedented access to their favorite shows and franchises."
