BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) - Although World Mental Health Day has passed, advocates in our region are recognizing its importance all month long.

According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, more than 3 in 10 adults in the U.S. have reported symptoms of anxiety and/or depression since May 2020.

Vermont is just below that national average, but the state is near the top of the list when it comes to people dealing with these feelings and not receiving counseling or therapy. Nearly 40% said they had an unmet need this past April.

To help, the Howard Center is hosting a number of virtual speakers and discussions surrounding mental health and how to access it.

“It’s a really nice opportunity for people to come and hear about self-care, and taking care of others, and there’s also time for a Q&A that is anonymous, and free and open,” said Denise Vignoe, with the Howard Center.

The speaker series continues Wednesday night. Best-selling author, host and educator Ashley C. Ford will share her perspectives on current topics like mental health, diversity, equity, inclusion, LGBTQIA+ and race.
