ASHTON NAMED NEW MEN'S BASKETBALL ASSISTANT COACH

The University of Minnesota Duluth men's basketball team has hired Jordan Ashton who will be joining the team as an assistant coach for the upcoming 2021-22 season. Ashton previously comes from Iowa Wesleyan University (NAIA), where he was the assistant coach / offensive coordinator during the 2020-2021 season. Under Ashton's help, the Tigers averaged 71.1 points per game.

"We are extremely excited to add a great young coach and person in Jordan Ashton," Head Coach Justin Wieck said. "Jordan is hard working, knowledgeable and fits the culture we have built here at UMD. I look forward to working with him, and I know that our players are excited as well. His experiences at many different levels as a player and a coach will help him connect with and inspire our players. Jordan is a great fit for the UMD and Duluth community and will bring great value to our program."

Previously, Jordan also was at the University of South Dakota where he was a graduate assistant during the 2019-2020 season. His main responsibilities included player development, film breakdown, scouting opponents and he also assisted with operations. Ashton's other coaching experience includes working at Kirkwood CC as an assistant coach where he was a part of the 2019 national championship team (NJCAA).

Jordan's playing experience includes stops at Northwest Missouri State (2012-2014), Kirkwood Community College (2014-2015), Iowa State (2015-2016), and Northern Iowa (2016-2017). Ashton was awarded first team All-American during his time at Kirkwood Community College. He also received a bachelor's degree in Liberal Studies while at Iowa State and earned his master's degree in Human Services while at Northern Iowa.

"I am absolutely honored to be able to join Coach Wieck's staff and be a part of the Men's basketball program here at the University of Minnesota Duluth," said Ashton.  "Getting the opportunity to work alongside & learn from such an amazing staff, as well as being able to coach a great group of high character, talented players is something that I could not turn down. This program has experienced a great amount of growth and success from the moment that Coach Wieck took over, and I am excited to assist with the continued success going forward!"
