The Tundra nameplate had plenty of frustrating issues before its most recent refresh. It was antiquated year after year. The Tundra remained on the low end of truck rankings. One of its biggest issues was its horrible fuel economy. The Tundra became notorious for guzzling gallons of gas.

Old Toyota Tundra trucks are a nightmare at the gas pump. Even the 2021 Toyota Tundra’s fuel economy was embarrassing. Toyota took its sweet time addressing this issue, but the 2022 Toyota Tundra finally offers a fair solution.

The 2022 Toyota Tundra is unique because it is the first Tundra to offer a hybrid powertrain option. The 2021 Toyota Tundra got 13 miles per gallon in the city and 17 miles per gallon on the highway. The new Toyota Tundra uses the Toyota i-FORCE MAX hybrid system. This system pairs a twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6 engine with a motor generator.

The new standard twin-turbo V6 Toyota Tundra gets an improved 18 miles per gallon in the city and 23 miles per gallon on the highway. The hybrid version will boast even better fuel economy though it has yet to receive a fuel economy estimate. The Tundra now features a competitive fuel economy for its standard model, and its hybrid model’s miles per gallon estimate is sure to turn heads.

What’s new on the 2022 Toyota Tundra?

Aside from improved fuel economy, the 2022 Toyota Tundra also reaps the benefits of a complete redesign. This includes a new body style, new front fascia, and refreshed cabin. The Tundra has gotten rid of its old thirsty V8 engine, but the standard twin-turbo V6 makes a whopping 389 horsepower. To put that number into perspective, the 2021 Toyota Tundra’s V8 engine only made 381 horsepower.

According to Car and Driver, the new Toyota Tundra has a maximum towing capacity of 12,000 pounds. That’s over 1,800 pounds more than the last model year’s maximum towing capacity. The new Tundra features a boxed-steel frame design that makes it durable without weighing it down. It also features a new multi-link rear suspension for better traction and a smoother ride.
