ABC had some pixie dust to spare this week — and a hole to fill in its Tuesday-night schedule! — resulting in a double dose of Disney on Dancing With the Stars.
Whereas Monday’s broadcast featured the dances of Disney heroes (read recap), Tuesday’s episode was all about Disney villains. And in a truly wicked twist, Dancing ended the show with a double elimination, counteracting Monday’s joyous announcement that no one would be going home on Heroes Night. But hey, there was no Mickey Dance Challenge this time, so really, everyone wins.
Before we get to that double elimination, let’s break down Tuesday’s villainous performances:
Jimmie Allen and pro Emma Slater (Jazz inspired by Peter Pan): My adoration for Jimmie and his stunning versatility is well-documented at this point… but let’s not throw those nines around so casually, judges! Perhaps it was just Jimmie’s bulky Captain Hook costume — including a jacket that did him no favors, folding over on itself with every flourish — but this jazz was a little heavy, and the singer often looked more disinterested than intense. Judges’ Score: 35/40 (67/80 for both nights)
Cody Rigsby and pro Cheryl Burke (Viennese Waltz inspired by Beauty and the Beast, pictured): It’s unfortunate that Cody’s routines have had so many caveats thus far — “That was good, for being in quarantine!” “You did well, for only three days of rehearsal!” — because he does have a stronger command of choreography than a lot of his fellow contestants. (Both routines this week started with long solo sections for Cody. No easy feat!) Provided he and Cheryl stick around, let’s hope they stop getting scored on this strange curve… and maybe the judges can sprinkle in some substantial constructive criticism, instead of, “Some things to work on, but who cares tonight”? Judges’ Score: 31/40 (58/80 for both nights)
Mel C and pro Gleb Savchenko (Viennese Waltz inspired by Maleficent): After a slightly underwhelming jazz on Monday, Mel completely bounced back with this gorgeous Viennese waltz, which was so fluid, it practically looked like one long, continuous movement. If we could see her footwork underneath all that dry ice, I imagine it would have been exquisite. Judges’ Score: 35/40 (66/80 for both nights)
JoJo Siwa and pro Jenna Johnson (Paso Doble inspired by Descendants 2): Carrie Ann Inaba’s call for JoJo to be more elegant seemed a bit strange, when the paso doble requires the very electricity that JoJo delivered here. Plus, those synchronized leaps at the end of the number were *chef’s kiss* Judges’ Score: 35/40 (70/80 for both nights)
Kenya Moore and pro Brandon Armstrong (Viennese Waltz inspired by Snow White): I think Len Goodman summed it up nicely when he called Kenya’s performance, simply, “a lovely dance in 3/4 time.” It’s a shame that the Real Housewives personality seems to be getting lost in the shuffle, because she’s shown impressive growth and a real commitment to improving. Up against the evening’s other Viennese waltzes, though, this one was a smidge forgettable. Judges’ Score: 30/40 (59/80 for both nights)
Iman Shumpert and pro Daniella Karagach (Argentine Tango inspired by Aladdin): Thank goodness we have Len bringing a little restraint to these scores, because the nine paddles probably should have stayed stowed away on this one. Don’t get me wrong: Those wild lifts require real strength and control on Iman’s part, and he delivered. But we’ve already seen he’s capable of being more than just Daniella’s base for her astounding tricks, and he deserves the opportunity to showcase more challenging, legitimate content. Judges’ Score: 33/40 (63/80 for both nights)
Melora Hardin and pro Artem Chigvintsev (Jazz inspired by Tangled): Melora understands the assignment every. dang. time, and it’s a treat to watch someone who so completely and consistently embodies new characters. I do wish Artem had taken more choreographing risks, with a style as dynamic as jazz and a partner as adept as Melora. But what we got was so, so good. Judges’ Score: 37/40, including the season’s first 10! (73/80 for both nights)
The Miz and pro Witney Carson (Argentine Tango inspired by The Lion King, pictured): This Argentine tango was a vast improvement over The Miz’s quickstep from Monday; even better, there was no blue body paint in sight! Even though this style is very much a showcase for the female dancer, The Miz did a solid job on the footwork front, and he brought the appropriate intensity to his performance. Judges’ Score: 34/40 (65/80 for both nights)
Brian Austin Green and pro Sharna Burgess (Paso Doble inspired by Pirates of the Caribbean): After five performance shows, Brian seems to be plateauing a bit, which is unfortunate on a season as stacked as this one. He did bring power and a bold energy to the ballroom, but his feet still looked timid and wobbly, particularly in those side-by-side sections next to Sharna. Judges’ Score: 27/40 (52/80 for both nights)
Matt James and pro Lindsay Arnold (Paso Doble inspired by The Jungle Book): It wasn’t a perfect paso doble, but Matt is finding his footing! Literally! Even more exciting, though, was Matt’s expressive face after taking up residence in Vacant Stare Land during previous routines. Judges’ Score: 31/40 (57/80 for both nights)
Olivia Jade and pro Val Chmerkovskiy (Jazz inspired by Coco): Man, this was an enchanting performance. The choreography underwhelmed a bit at the very end, when Olivia and Val seemed to waste several eight-counts lingering in that spotlight. But the majority of the performance was energetic and genuinely funny, with Olivia embracing the theatrics nicely. Judges’ Score: 35/40 (70/80 for both nights)
Suni Lee and pro Sasha Farber (Viennese Waltz inspired by Hocus Pocus): It was such a delight to see Suni finally elongating her movements, when she’s suffered from a case of spaghetti arms in past weeks. Her face could still stand to be a tad more animated — give us those wild Melora Hardin eyes, girl! — but the lines and extensions here were just lovely. Judges’ Score: 35/40 (68/80 for both nights)
Amanda Kloots and pro Alan Bersten (Paso Doble inspired by Cruella): Let’s address the most pressing topic first: Who did Alan wrong in the hair and makeup department? First, that Tarzan wig, now, these eyebrows! A costumer has got to be sabotaging him, no? But I digress. Since Amanda’s performance on Monday was unusually reserved at times, I was relieved to see her go full de Vil here, bringing a ferocity to her execution without sacrificing proper form. Judges’ Score: 36/40 (68/80 for both nights)
And now, the results!
COUPLES IN JEOPARDY
Brian Austin Green and pro Sharna Burgess
Matt James and pro Lindsay Arnold
Kenya Moore and pro Brandon Armstrong
SAVED BY JUDGES
Kenya Moore and pro Brandon Armstrong (saved by Derek and Len)
ELIMINATED
Brian Austin Green and pro Sharna Burgess (automatically eliminated with lowest scores)
Matt James and pro Lindsay Arnold (though Bruno and Carrie Ann voted to save them)
Your turn! Are you bummed to see Brian and Matt leave the ballroom? Hit the comments!
The right two went home. Cody keeps getting unfair scores I’m glad he is staying until next week at least.
I agree. I totally called . Furthermore: Len needs to retire and they need to add some new dance styles
like Bollywood, Hip Hop, Tribal, etc.
Respectfully disagree about those additional dance styles. They only added Contemporary and Jazz to allow Allison Holker to dance in her style when she was a pro. This is supposed to be a show with ballroom dancing. It just keeps getting further and further from that every season, and I really don’t like the idea of adding more non-ballroom styles.
So You Think You Can Dance gave audiences an opportunity to see all of those non-ballroom styles and more.
I don’t understand the elimination. The judges were 2-1 for Matt, why do they need Len to chime in and save a team that had lower pts tonight. I’m confused. I feel like I need a better explanation
That confused me too, but apparently, it has to be unanimous among the other 3 for a save. It seems when they talk about the vote being “divided,” it doesn’t mean EVENLY divided.
Well the 2 couples with the lowest scores did go home this time so it was fair
can you math? Kenya did not receive a lower score.
It not hard it was two to 1 like you said len gets his vote like every juge all four get one vote. Len as the head Jude gets the last vote so he vote to get Matt home. So it two to two len gets to break an tie they just don’t ask him did you change your mind in the last 10 seconds or still feel the same.
I felt like Sharna took training on Brian too easy due to their personal relationship. I’ve seen Sharna “push” her partners before and she simply wasn’t with Brian. I think he could’ve had a lot of potential had he been with a different partner. It’s a shame TPTB decided to put them together just because of their personal relationship.
I agree
every time I see Pirates used as a Disney week song, I go back & watch Riker/Allison’s from Season 20, they set the bar SO high, Frankie and Witney have probably come the closest to meeting it. Agree with you about Alan, WHO did he tick off in the hair department (and Melora last night?? what the hair happened!! haha). I just keep loving her & Artem together, she’s definitely no longer a dark horse.
Please tell me why Len’s vote counts for more? In the last vote, two judges voted to keep Matt in the competition (should have happened) and Derek voted to save Kenya so Len jumped in to vote for Kenya. That’s a tie, no?
What Tyra failed to explain better is the fact that Len has TWO votes. So, if he only had one vote and kept Kenya, it would have been 2-2. But he has two votes, so it became 3-2.
If Len had kept Matt, it would have been 4-1.
And if the other three had kept Matt or Kenya, that’s 3 votes and Len wouldn’t have been able to influence anything with his 2 votes.
I’m not watching, but now I’m curious. Why does Len have 2 votes? Did the others use theirs or does he just have more votes than them? If so, why? This new voting system is so screwed up. It used to be equal between the audience and the judges but they had to change it up so the judges could keep their faves and unfairly target the people teh audience save like Cody.
It’s because Len is the “head judge.”
That doesn’t seem fair. All judges should have the same amount of votes. I guess they need a tie breaker but it still doesn’t seem fair. It also just sounds like a stupid system. The audience votes and the judges votes should just be calculated 50/50 like they used to be and the person with the least votes should go home. They obviously changed it so it wouldn’t be a popularity contest but now it’s just the judges saving their faves and ultimately deciding who to keep in the competition and who to send home and audience participation doesn’t even seem necessary at this point.
And if Sharna and Brian were their favorites, how could the judges save them?
The audience has spoken and the two lowest are up for elimination. One gets eliminated and one gets a second chance. This lets the judges save a couple that have an off week or an unpopular dance, but they can’t keep saving them every week.
He’s the tiebreaker
But it wasn’t a tie! I am not saying that the wrong people went home I’m just saying that the voting made absolutely NO sense. Len should not have had to vote.
It’s the same as the old American Idol when Simon was the head judge and there were 4 judges on the panel.
During audition, when the judges are split 2-2. Simon’s vote then counted as 2, so if Simon said yes, then they went to hollywood
Len is head judge so in a tie he gets a second vote to break the tie
Len doesn’t get two votes, if it’s 2 to 2 – it’s whoever Len chooses that gets the advantage because he is head judge so there is no tie.
Either way Great to see Matt go, so sick of a bachelor/bachelorette winning the title.
Honestly! When the judges are against you and don’t want you to improve you’ve already lost. They made up their minds already! I think it’s time for some new judges! Some fresh faces!
This show is suppose to be happy and exciting and a joy to watch and every time we go to the judges table I ALWAYS fast forward.
Was totally rooting for Sharna and Brian! He had potential and I do believe she pushed him, but it takes two to tango!
Matt & Lindsay VS Kenya & Brandon:
The 3 judges votes were useless since Len’s vote prevailed. LEN SHOULD JUST HAVE VOTED ALONE.
Two bad dancers were eliminated but I just want the person of bad character to leave… Olivia Jade.
Get over it already. She doesn’t have bad character. Her parents did what they did, and both paid for it. She’s just trying to move on with her life. I hope she does well in life and this show. She’s a great dancer and deserves to stay.
You do know Jade was also at risk for federal charges correct? She posed for fake row pictures. She posed as a fake athlete. I also watched her interview with Ms Smith on Facebook. Her defense was all of the other rich kids were doing it. She does not belong on a show with real athletes.
Thank you, Zoe.
Really the pose picture you are actually upset about that. The
Picture of her on the rolling machine. Was her reaching as far as she could over a wooden box. The same thing everyone does in school to see how much they grew. Get over it.
Just to inform you. 2 parents that did not make deals just got convicted in court last week. I guess the judge did not think it was something to get over. Lori and her husband were going down this same route if not for finally making plea deals with the feds. The athletic director also involved was fired . You know the one who accepted the fake pics to begin with.
She knew what her parents were doing when she posed for the picture….for her to say she didn’t is BS. The fact is Olivia Jade couldn’t care less about her what her parents did, she hasn’t been playing full on victim, but she is using this to her advantage. She didn’t want to go to college to begin with and the fact that she doesn’t have to now and BONUS she is reaping the rewards of the world’s warped sense of celebrity that is out there now. I mean the red table talk and her faux contrition? Now DWTS? She’s benefiting from it all and will eventually become that influencer star she always wanted to be.
If there’s some justice in the world Melora Hardin should win. She’s amazing dancers and great person all around. Time for a woman over 50 to win again. The only time it happened was Jennifer Grey. Now it’s Melora’s time!
💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯
Yes!! Big fan of Melora since forever. Have you heard her albums singing in French? Sublime.
(1) The judges have hated Sharna since she won with Bobby Bones so there’s that…
(2) Why doesn’t the lowest scoring person go home when the judges are tied & not let Len’s decision be the deciding factor?
(3) This needs to stop being the Tyra Show
Bruno and CarrieAnn are the only 2 judges needed for the show. Tyra needs a makeover (a model) who would have known. She is awful as a host! DWTS has really changed since it first aired. I was a dedicated fan back then. Not so much anymore. I miss Tom who was an awesome host! I only watch the show to see Iman Shumpert, I think he is great! He and his partner together are progressing every week and I love to see what is coming next for them. After they dance I turn the show off!
I have to agree with you, Tyra Banks I’d a horrid host!!! She is far too dramatic, she pauses between evey single word she utters, and to top it off, she gives me the impression that she is the STAR, the only reason people tune in. It would be nice to see her wearing something other than a ridiculous costum that does not flatter her at all. She is beautiful, but not with the Halloween costumes that she wears.
Melora has been the real surprise this season! The move Iman and Daniella did was incredible!!
The last time there was an elimination, it was Christine Chiu and Len said he would have saved her. The others voted for Kenya. So, why didn’t Len cast his absolute vote then and keep Christine? She was clearly better than Kenya. And Matt was better this time and his scores were better too! What’s going on? Not to mention Tyra is so irritating!
“Full screen not available…” Why the hell NOT??? Like everybody else, I enjoy looking at the available scenes, full size. WHY have you denied us this privilege???
Dan
Tyra Banks is driving me nuts with her stupid costumes and her over dramatizing! It seems like she is trying to make it more about her than the contestants! I can’t stand it or her anymore
Why is no one complaining from the west coast of their vote not counting.
The two right couples went home. Brian and Sharna and Matt and Lindsay were awful. I feel for Sharna because this season is likely to ruin her professional reputation, and possibly hurt her relationship with Brian. Never mix business with pleasure.
I’m delighted to see that bachelor nation didn’t ruin the show this season. I’m so tired of seeing failed bachelor rejects steal the show with votes and poor dancing.
I’m glad Cody and Cheryl weren’t sent home. I think they would have caused the show significant damage, as neither one of them could be faulted for contracting COVID. That being said, I felt as though their heroes dance lacked content. Granted I’m in no position to professionally judge a dance competition, but having watched the two of the dance, from a lay perspective, I felt as though Len was right: too much side-by-side, less in-hold frames. After two full weeks apart, viewers wanted more from them. Cheryl should have done better with her choreography. Even with less practice time, the judges may have scored them better if their was more in-hold movement.
Have NOT enjoyed for years. Have watched to see if I could get back into to show. BUT ITS NOT HAPPENING!
