Though zen has its roots in a Buddhism school of thought, the term is used more fluidly these days to describe something that brings about peace and calm. For many of us, our interpretation of peace and calm may differ – while being out in nature all alone might energise some of us, the idea of it can also terrify some people. When it comes to building a zen home, there really are no rules. Whether you want to keep it absolutely minimal with not even a piece of furniture in sight or fill the place with things that make you feel at peace, it's up to you. As they say, our home is a sanctuary so here is how you can truly make it the place for peace on earth.

Maintain the 'clutter'

Most people think zen is about absolute minimalism but that can be hard for most people, especially when you're living in a small space. For starters, embrace the space you have. Marie Kondo got it right when it comes to surrounding yourself with things that spark joy – keep the things that don't out of sight!

Invest in smart storage, or if you wish, good-looking storage. Hide those unsightly cables and wires, put (and hide) away tacky souvenirs that were given to you and keep the stray shoe, sweater, makeup brushes, art supplies or whatever you might have laying around efficiently in a box. Of course, IKEA would have plenty of options for affordable storage but you could always keep it cute with LEGO boxes perhaps?

When it comes to creating calmness and peace, it's always about tapping on our senses. Choose a scent for your space that would always remind you to take it easy and relax. Shop the range of aromatic room sprays at Aesop which includes Olous, a citrus and botanical scent which is also warm.

If you prefer candles, we keep it local with our favourite brands, including Hush which sticks to clean and simple scents like lavender, geranium and rose or choose the exotic scents named after beautiful destinations from Pass It On

Fans of incense can shop at local online store Mellow Over which stocks popular label PF Candle Co. The incense cones come in beautiful refreshing scents inspired by the Californian coast.

The best part is that anyone can get into it, even if you don't have a green thumb. Having plants in the house not only helps with the air quality but also helps create a soothing environment and relieve stress – perfect for creating the zen home. Start shopping for plants!

Create a quiet corner

If you don't have the luxury of space at home, then instead have one area in the house where you can get away from it all. Whether it's a whole room or just a quiet corner in the house, keep this space from too much clutter and electronic distractions. Ideally, this space would have lots of natural light, some greenery and some of your favourite items around.
