Mason Mount has looked tired for Chelsea this season, largely without his usual verve, and that pattern continued with England tonight.

We were praying he would get a break this week, instead he’s been used heavily by Gareth Southgate. Thomas Tuchel will surely be considering another rest for the midfielder.

Football.London pointed out that he “didn’t create a chance,” and that his pressing wasn’t at its usual intensity. It’s hard to argue either of those cases.

What it is fair to say, however, is that the rest of the England team were no better, and that the opposition were excellent. This wasn’t a stroll against minnows, Hungary are a serious team, who kept at bay a team of Premier League stars who all looked like they wanted to put their feet off at a safe distance quite easily at times.

Mount’s performance wasn’t good, but he wasn’t alone in that.
