Giants work out guard Forrest Lamp

The New York Giants, continuing their search for offensive line help, worked out guard Forrest Lamp on Tuesday.

The Giants have had four starters at left guard — Shane Lemieux, Nick Gates, Ben Bredeson and Matt Skura. Wes Martin, signed off the Washington Football Team practice squad two weeks ago, got considerable playing time Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys.

Lamp has had an injury-plagued career. He was a second-round pick by the Los Angeles Chargers in 2017, but missed that entire season with a torn ACL. He played only two games in 2018, serving as a backup. He played seven games with two starts in 2019 before suffering a broken fibula.

Last season, Lamp finally broke through. He started all 16 games at left guard for the Chargers, logging, 1,175 snaps. Lamp had only a 49.8 Pro Football Focus grade (60.7 as a pass blocker, 42.8 as a run blocker).

Lamp signed a one-year free-agent contract with the Buffalo Bills this offseason. The Bills placed him on IR in late August after a calf injury sidelined him most of training camp, and ultimately waived him.

The Giants also worked out offensive tackles Devery Hamilton and Elijah Nkansah. The Gints signed Hamilton to their practice squad. An undrafted rookie, the 6-foot-6, 311-pound Hamilton spent some time with the Las Vegas Raiders.

Practice squad protections

Here are the four practice squad protections for the Giants this week:

Cunningham was elevated to the active roster last week with Andrew Thomas dealing withg a foot injury. Pettis is insurance with the wide receiver injuries. Protecting him probably indicates that he is higher on the pecking order than David Sills, and more likely to be brought to the 53-man roster. Lewerke will have to be elevated or signed to the 53-man roster if Daniel Jones (concussion) can’t play.
