Family court offers e-filing in northeast Colorado counties

The 13th Judicial District, which includes Kit Carson, Logan, Morgan, Phillips, Sedgwick, Washington and Yuma counties is part of an expansion of e-filing capabilities announced this week by the Colorado Judicial Department.

The pilot program allows electronic filing of documents by people representing themselves in family court cases has. The 13th is one of seven judicial districts in the expansion, encompassing 23 counties.

The e-filing program is open to litigants without attorneys in dissolution of marriage, dissolution of civil union, and custody cases. Approximately 75 percent of litigants in such cases choose to represent themselves.

Other judicial districts included in the expansion are the 5th, which includes Clear Creek, Eagle, Lake and Summit counties, the 6th, encompassing Archuleta, La Plata and San Juan counties, the 10th, which covers Pueblo County, the15th, covering Baca, Cheyenne, Kiowa and Prowers counties, the 18th, encompassing Elbert and Lincoln counties, and the 22nd, covering Dolores and Montezuma counties. Arapahoe and Douglas counties are already in the program.

The program is now available in all or portions of all but three of Colorado’s 22 judicial districts. It is not available in Districts 1, 2 and 3. These districts cover Gilpin, Jefferson, Denver, Huerfano and Las Animas counties. The program covers 59 of Colorado’s 64 counties.

Only named parties to a case are eligible to e-file. Requests to waive fees cannot be made through the e-filing system at this time; indigent parties will need to continue filing paper documents at the clerk’s office in the courthouse.
