DORAL, Fla. (WKRC) - A teacher accused of having a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old student is now pregnant, according to police.
41-year-old Heiry Calvi was arrested on Thursday and released Saturday after posting bond, CBS Miami reports.
Calvi had taught the student at John I. Smith K-8 Center in the past, and she began tutoring him privately at his home in 2020.
The incident came to light in March when the student apparently showed others a cell phone video of the two of them having sex.
A school resource officer then reported the relationship to the school's principal.
Officers searched the students phone and discovered photos that were "photographs that were certainly inappropriate, that indicate that there was in fact an inappropriate relationship," said Doral police spokesperson, Rey Valdes.
Police reported they also found messages between the two in which they said "I love you" to each other, pictures of them together at locations outside the school such as Miami Beach, alleged evidence that Calvi allowed the student to use her credit card, and an audio recording of the student advising an unknown other person to deny awareness of the relationship.
An arrest report said the student claims the encounters were consensual.
"A child does not have the legal authority to give consent, even though the child may say 'This is OK,''' Valdes told the Miami Herald. "The responsibility is on the adult. This is not what a teacher does."
The Miami-Dade County Public Schools district released a statement Thursday saying, in part, "Miami-Dade County Public Schools is disturbed by today's arrest involving inappropriate employee behavior. When the district was apprised of these allegations in March, the employee was immediately reassigned to a non-school site location. The district will begin employment termination proceedings and will ensure the individual is prevented from seeking future employment with this school system."
Calvi faces a slew of charges, including lewd and lascivious battery, electronic transmission harmful to minors, unlawful use of a communications device, child neglect, and offenses against students by authority figures.
When she was taken into custody, police also discovered a handgun in her car, which she said belonged to her husband. She is also being charged with possession of a firearm on school property.
