This Should Be Your Next Getaway
Welcome to the extended version of my weekly newsletter, House Call (and if you aren’t subscribed, what are you waiting for?). This is where I spend some time pondering a theme, answering a question, and helping you shop smarter—or at least find some new inspiration. Reach out if you ever need recommendations. I’m happy to search the internet for the most specific furnishings, decor, and knickknacks.
A couple weeks ago, I drove up to Montreal for a celebratory long weekend. The foliage between here and there—winding through Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Québec—was incredible. I lost track of how many times I said “WOW.” Once in the city, it was bustling with good energy—I love living in the woods, but sometimes you forget how nice it is to see great outfits, architectural wonders, and a variety of culture. Plus, still more perfect displays of fall foliage.
To maximize my city jaunt, I stayed in two different hotels in the Old Port. The first stop was the Hôtel William Gray, which is tucked down a narrow cobblestone street. You almost miss the place, but once inside the combination of old and new—exposed concrete beams, massive modern light fixtures, a lush rooftop terrace—really feels quite special. My room too, with floor-to-ceiling windows, looked out over the St. Lawrence River and had a prime viewing of the La Grande Roue de Montréal (a giant ferris wheel). Next stop was the Hotel Nelligan, just down the street, and equally charming. This hotel feels much more Old World, with exposed brick walls, and an electric fireplace to cozy up the room. Eating breakfast in its sun dappled atrium was an added treat.
So, now that I have you daydreaming about a trip to Montreal, here’s a brief list of hotels and Airbnbs you should book ASAP. Get the peak foliage while you can!
