Esquire editor-at-large Dave Holmes catches up with Skylar Astin from “Pitch Perfect” to talk about the best spots in New Orleans
Tune in to Very Local on Oct. 14 for In Transit by Esquire’s look at New Orleans. Esquire’s editor-at-large Dave Holmes (you might remember him from MTV) catches up with Skylar Astin (best known for his role in “Pitch Perfect”) who is traveling back to Los Angeles after a visit to New Orleans.
Astin spent plenty of time in New Orleans while he was in Baton Rouge filming “Pitch Perfect.” Over cocktails and bites at an airport bar, Holmes asks Astin about his favorite/crazy New Orleans stories and travel mishaps.
🍸 New Orleans-inspired cocktails
Pimm’s Cup
A Pimm's Cup is typically a gin-based cocktail, but some like to add just a splash of tequila. Combine the booze with agave and lemon juice, and add ice and give it a good shake. Top it off with a splash of club soda and garnish it with cucumbers, berries and mint.
Paloma
A Paloma is made with tequila plus grapefruit and lime juice, and then just a little bit of agave. Shake that all over rice, add a splash of soda and garnish with the grapefruit slice and hibiscus salt.
Juan Collins
A Juan Collins is a tequila-based cocktail. Combine tequila and a chili-based liquor and mix that with lime juice and agave over ice. then top it with club soda and garnish with the lime wheel and jalapeno salt.
Cajun food @ Cochon
Located near the French Quarter, Cochon offers a unique take on cajun and Southern classics. Cochon uses locally sourced ingredients and is known for its seasonal cocktail menu.

Live jazz @ Bacchanal
It started as a sleepy little wine shop on the outskirts of town. Bacchanal opened on Valentine's Day, 22 years ago. After Hurricane Katrina, Bacchanal became an important part of this city's recovery. Every Sunday, local chefs would cook for the crowds, turning it into the backyard speakeasy that it is today. Bacchanal is a go-to spot for jazz and highlights local New Orleans artists. At Bacchanal, you will find New Orleans people playing New Orleans music.
