Cleveland Cavaliers begin training camp cuts, release Brodric Thomas and Mfiondu Kabengele

The Cleveland Cavaliers waived Brodric Thomas on Tuesday afternoon.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Cleveland Cavaliers have started their roster cuts.

Shooting guard Brodric Thomas and center Mfiondu Kabengele were both waived on Tuesday afternoon.

Thomas, a 6-foot-5 combo guard who played in 32 regular-season games for Cleveland and Houston, signed his two-way qualifying offer with the Cavaliers less than a month ago. Thomas only played seven total minutes in the first four preseason games.

Kabengele, a 2019 first-round pick by the Nets, appeared in 16 games during the 2020-21 season. While he inked a non-guaranteed multi-year contract on May 1, Cleveland’s increased frontcourt depth made Kabengele the most likely non-guaranteed player to get cut prior to the regular season opener on Oct. 20.

The training camp roster stands at 18 players, with invitees Tacko Fall, Kyle Guy, R.J. Nembhard and Mitch Ballock still remaining. Both two-way spots remain available, as Cleveland’s front office continues evaluating all of its options. Some of those four could end up playing for the Cleveland Charge, the team’s G League affiliate, if they don’t stick in the NBA.
