Mario Lemieux presents Sidney Crosby with the “C” jersey as he was named the captain of the Pittsburgh Penguins, becoming the youngest team captain in NHL history on May 31, 2007, at Mellon Arena.

Pittsburgh Penguins center Sidney Crosby remains the longest-tenured captain in the NHL heading into the 2023-24 season, having earned the “C” in May 2007.

Crosby’s run is followed by Washington Capitals left wing Alex Ovechkin (2010) and Colorado Avalanche left wing Gabriel Landeskog (2012).

Boston Bruins left wing Brad Marchand, St. Louis Blues center Brayden Schenn, Vancouver Canucks defenseman Quinn Hughes and Winnipeg Jets center Adam Lowry are the NHL’s newest captains, each being named this offseason.

Six teams enter the 2023-24 season without captains: The Anaheim Ducks, Arizona Coyotes, Calgary Flames, Chicago Blackhawks, Philadelphia Flyers and Seattle Kraken haven’t named replacements for players who retired or were traded.
