The fire started around 11:30 p.m. Monday at an apartment complex on Bering Drive near San Felipe Street on the city's East Side.
Houston Fire Department officials said the fire was likely caused by the dryer that was apparently packed with lint, which was stuck in the exhaust system. They said the fire started while the tenant was gone and apparently left the apartment with the dryer still running.
Firefighters were able to rescue the dogs from the heavy smoke from the fire and give them oxygen.
No other injuries were reported.
