It's certainly going to be a busy month for General Motors. On October 26, the much-anticipated next-generation Chevrolet Corvette Z06 will break cover. This isn't the only major model reveal GM is planning, however, because the GMC Sierra is getting a huge update for the 2022 model year.

General Motors has confirmed the refreshed 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 will debut on October 21 in an online virtual event, bringing "significant updates" to the design, technology, and capability. Further details are being kept under wraps, but it's safe to say we can expect the updates from its corporate sibling, the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, to carry over.

Under the hood, the base model's 2.7-liter turbo engine will boast 20 percent more torque than the 2021 model but the naturally aspirated 4.3-liter V6 and naturally-aspirated 5.3-liter V8 units will no longer be available for 2022. For reference, the 2.7-liter turbo generates 310 hp and 348 lb-ft of torque in the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The towing capacity for the 3.0-liter Duramax diesel variant will also increase by 20 percent.

On the outside, the 2022 Sierra will likely sport a larger grille, revised bumpers, and redesigned headlights to freshen up the exterior. The interior will also get a major revamp with more premium materials in higher trims.

As for tech, expect the 2022 GMC Sierra to boast a larger touchscreen and a digital instrument cluster, while the range-topping Denali trim will come with GM's semi-autonomous Super Cruise assist. Also joining the model lineup will be the new off-road-focused AT4X trim, which will be the equivalent to the rugged 2022 Silverado ZR2. Chances are these updates will make the 2022 GMC Sierra more expensive than the 2021 model, which starts at $30,100.

These are all welcome improvements but the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 is unlikely to put a major dent in sales of the redesigned Ford F-150 and Ram 1500, which continue to dominate full-size truck sales.
