Young Colin Kaepernick Is Challenged to ‘Prove Them Wrong’ in Trailer for Colin in Black and White Drama Series
As a teenage athlete, Colin Kaepernick is challenged to “prove them wrong” — though he wonders why he always has to? — in the trailer for Netflix‘s scripted drama series Colin in Black and White.
Premiering Friday, Oct. 29 with six 30-minute episodes, Colin in Black and White tells Kaepernick’s origin story through the lens of his formative years as a gifted football, baseball and basketball prospect (played by Jaden Michael), “before he reached the highest levels of American football as an NFL quarterback and became a cultural icon and activist.” Mary-Louise Parker (Weeds) and Nick Offerman (Parks and Recreation) also star.
After claiming and then sharing the San Francisco 49ers QB job over multiple seasons, Kaepernick famously knelt during the playing of the national anthem ahead of a 2016 preseason game. When he became a free agent after that season, he remained unsigned — presumably amid political pressures.
Previewing the Netflix series’ introductory scope, Kaepernick says,” In high school, I faced a lot of different challenges from sports, to my family, and other parts of my personal life, which a lot of viewers may be able to relate to. But I also faced obstacles as a Black kid growing up in a white family in a white community.” He brought his pitch to filmmaker Ava DuVernay in 2017, who signed on to “bring these stories to life in the most impactful and compelling way possible,” he says.
“What interested me,” says DuVernay, “was the idea that, through his story, I could shed light on a core belief that I hold: that we can all be the hero, the lead character, of our own lives…. Bottom line, I was interested in the process of becoming the star of your own life. This doesn’t mean not being of service to others or being selfish and ego-driven. It means having the confidence to stand up and stand strong for oneself so that you can be the best version of yourself.”
That was a really well-cut trailer. I’m excited to check this out. I’ll give anything that Ava is involved with a try at this point
O.K. I’m intrigued. I generally hate anything football related (FNL excluded). But this actually looks interesting, important, and well done. I had no interest in this based of the initial press release, but I’ll certainly be checking it out based on this trailer. Although, the amount of Kaepernick narrating at the beginning had me initially concerned this was filmed more like a documentary with reconstruction than biographical narrative.

He was an overrated quarterback who had some success early in his career, and then flamed out when defensive coordinators figured out his obvious limitations as a one read and run quarterback.
He proved no one wrong, save those who thought he was more than a barely mediocre starting QB.
In a league that is way too forgiving of the criminal element in its midst, the only thing that guarantees unemployment is if you can’t play at a high level.
And he can’t.
That’s why he’s not playing anymore, not because of ‘political pressures…’
You have no clue what you are talking about. Low rated, and out of the league for years, football players got were brought back.
It had EVERYTHING to do with political pressures from that one term clown who used to live in that white house saying he should lose his job.

Name one ‘low-rated’ and ‘out of the league’ player that threw away opportunities like kaepernick did as recently as November of 2019 when the league set up a tryout which he then decided to skip for his own set up.
Or when before that when he rejected the opportunity to go to the Broncos because he didn’t want to take a pay cut. Cause a quarterback who was benched for perennial superstar Blaine Gabbert before he started to begin his kneeling ‘protest’ definitely merited a starter’s salary…
Or when he blew his chance to sign with the Ravens because his girlfriend compared hall of famer, and noted stabbing enthusiast, Ray Lewis to a house n—– because he hugged the team’s white owner after their last Super Bowl win.
Or you could simply remember how terribly he played in final season in the league going 1-10 in his final eleven starts with the 49ers, including a special game against the Bears where he had negative net yards after three quarters.
Anyone who is a bigger fan of football rather than politics understands that he’s not playing anymore because he stank not because of politics, regardless of which geriatric clown was in the White House.

Just someone who’s been a football fan for decades but can’t recognize an often sacked quarterback who went 3-16 in final two injury filled years with the 49ers, including a game in which he had net negative yards after three quarters against the Bears.
Or someone who forgot that he rejected an offer to sign with the Broncos because he didn’t want to take a pay cut after that stellar final year.
Or someone who still remembers that he compared noted stabbing enthusiast Ray Lewis, who was pushing for the Ravens to sign him, to a house n— because he hugged the owner of the team when they won their last Super Bowl, and thus ending the team’s interest in him.
Or someone who didn’t forget that in November of 2019 he spurned the league sponsored personal tryout, to set up his own Nike endorsed workout at high school miles away which he used to debut a new pair of shoes he had developed for the company.
None of this has to do with the whichever geriatric president sits in the White House. It’s all on him, by deciding to be a branded activist rather than a professional athlete.
Everyone said the Bronco’s offer wasn’t a real offer. And I know what he did and didn’t do since I only watched 49 games.
Him giving up “opportunities” is not what you originally complained about.
I’m not into figuring out stats but when the professionals say that teams who needed a quarter back because of injuries signed lesser quality players, I’m going to believe them.
Who is they? Did his white classmates said “you can’t play football cause you’re black?”
