History will be made on the opening night of the 2021-22 National Hockey League season, as the newest franchise in the league meets one of the more recently added franchises, when the Seattle Kraken head to Sin City to meet with the Vegas Golden Knights.
With a lot of excitement, fanfare, merchandise sales and a little bit of expectations on-ice, the Kraken are set to begin their inaugural season in the league. After the Expansion Draft this past offseason, many are excited to see how this team will perform on the ice. They have established stars such as former Norris Trophy-winning defenseman Mark Giordano and former Colorado Avalanche goaltender Philipp Grubauer, and young rising talent in Carson Soucy and Joonas Donskooi.
The expectations may be high for Seattle after the first season for the most recent expansion club in the NHL, after the Vegas Golden Knights made it all the way to the Stanley Cup Finals in the 2017-18 season. However, since that magical season, the Golden Knights have been unable to make it back to the championship series, including losing in back-to-back semifinals. While they have a lot of returning veterans, things will look a little different for Vegas, especially with Robin Lehner being the undisputed no. 1 after the team traded 2021 Vezina winner Marc-Andre Fleury to Chicago.
