Three students in Boone, Putnam and Kanawha counties received a surprise of a lifetime Tuesday when they had a visit from Gov. Jim Justice and his prized pooch Babydog and learned they had won a full-ride college scholarship.
Winners who received the school visits and scholarships in the state's vaccination sweepstakes were Ashley Dingess of Jeffrey, a student at Scott High School in Boone County; Connor Reece of Hurricane, a student at Hurricane High School; and Karlee Baisden of Charleston, a student at Andrew Jackson Middle School in Kanawha County, according to a news release from the governor's office.
The other two scholarship winners are Katelyn Lambert of Harrisville and Joseph Littlepage of Point Pleasant.
All five students have each won a full four-year scholarship to any public college or university in the state. The scholarships, each valued at more than $100,000, cover room and board, tuition and books.
On Friday, Justice announced that Sgt Michael Beall, a firefighter with the West Virginia Air National Guard’s 167th Airlift Wing in Martinsburg and the Martinsburg VA Medical Center, had won a new Corvette through the sweepstakes.
Additional winners were announced Thursday for prizes including a custom boat, a dream wedding valued at $150,000, free gas for 10 years, premium ATVs, a top-of-the-line zero-turn lawn mower, West Virginia University nd Marshall University football or basketball season ticket packages and season passes to West Virginia ski resorts.
Three more scholarship winners and the winner of another zero-turn lawn mower will be revealed later Thursday.
Thursday marks the sixth and final week of prize giveaways as part of “Do it for Babydog: Round 2.”
