Former Ambassador Nikki Haley on Tuesday is endorsing former U.S. State Department official Matt Mowers for New Hampshire’s 1st Congressional District seat – her first endorsement of the 2022 election cycle in a competitive U.S. House primary. The Haley endorsement was shared first with WMUR.Haley, who is also a former governor of South Carolina, endorsed Mowers when he ran for the seat in 2020, but not until Mowers had won the party primary and was the Republican nominee. This year, with a crowded six-person Republican field having already lined up to compete for the right to challenge Democratic U.S. Rep. Chris Pappas, Haley is making her choice known early in the New Hampshire campaign. “Matt’s a conservative fighter who knows that ‘Live Free or Die’ isn’t just the motto of New Hampshire,” Haley said. “It’s what’s at stake if the Democrats remain in control of D.C.“Matt has devoted his life to public service, and he’ll be ready to take on (U.S. House Speaker Nancy) Pelosi’s socialist agenda on day one. I’m proud to endorse Matt because he’s pro-Second Amendment, pro-life and pro-freedom,” Haley said.Haley served as former President Donald Trump’s U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations from early 2017 through the end of 2018 after being confirmed by a 96-4 vote of the U.S. Senate. She was previously the first female governor of South Carolina, serving from early 2011 until early 2017, and she was the youngest governor in the country when she took office.Haley is widely viewed as a potential 2024 presidential candidate, especially if Trump ultimately decides not to run. But she has said she is focusing solely on the 2022 midterm election.Haley launched a political action committee, Stand for America, in January to take positions on key policy issues and to endorse candidates in the midterm election.Through the PAC, Haley has now endorsed 11 sitting Republican U.S. House members and a U.S. House candidate in New Mexico, now joined by Mowers. She has also endorsed U.S. Sen. Tim Scott in her home state, as well as two Republican candidates for governors seats in 2021 races – Jack Ciattarelli in New Jersey and Glenn Younkin in Virginia. Her Stand for America PAC lists its key issues as opposing an expansion of the U.S. Supreme Court, an expansion of the number of states in the nation, raising taxes, “socialist health care,” a ban on fracking, “defunding the police and the military,” “undermining sanctity of life,” “appeasing China,” “reentering the Iran nuclear deal” and reversing the Trump-recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.Mowers and Haley overlapped in their service at the State Department in 2017 and 2018. Mowers was appointed a senior advisor to the department by Trump early in Trump’s presidency.Haley, as ambassador, gained recognition for her tough warnings to North Korea and in strong support of Israel.“I am thrilled to have earned the support of Ambassador Haley, who courageously took on bigots and tyrants on the international stage to defend our ally, Israel,” Mowers said. “She understands the need for tough national security decisions that that put American interests first, as opposed to the haphazard, weak-kneed foreign policy of Joe Biden that led to a debacle in Afghanistan and the deaths of 13 American service members.“Together, we will take back Congress and restore strong American leadership.”Haley most recently visited New Hampshire in early October 2020, appearing at fundraisers for Mowers and for the Committee to Elect House Republicans, a political committee focused on electing GOP candidates to the New Hampshire House.
