A Screven County grandfather remains in jail on a $10,000 bond after fatally shooting his grandson, according to authorities.

The Screven County Sheriff’s Office and Georgia Bureau of Investigation are jointly investigating the discharge of the firearm at a residence on Bryan’s Bridge Road that resulted in the arrest of 70-year-old Walter Rose Washington. The incident that resulted in the death of Javoris Jonquil Scott occurred during the afternoon on Oct. 6.

Scott, who went by the nickname “Duke,” died less than a month before his 30th birthday.

Authorities are reviewing the case to see if a reported dispute between Washington and Scott prior to the shooting have a connection. Currently, Washington of 1053 Bryan’s Bridge Road is charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Washington could face additional charges if the case is presented to a Superior Court grand jury in January.

Sheriff’s Office Investigator Dwight Singleton said, “money could have led to the shooting.”

“Mr. Washington does not deny he shot Mr. Scott, but there are extenuating circumstances that led to the shooting,” Singleton said. “At this time, we continue to gather all the information to determine the legal ramifications towards Mr. Washington.”

According to criminal records, Washington's prior felony conviction stems from driving offenses.

“It is just a sad affair when a grandfather and grandson cannot discuss things amicably without it ending so tragically,” Singleton said.

Scott was born Nov. 5, 1991, in Sylvania. At an early age he joined Shechinah Worship Center. He attended the Screven County Public School System.

A Home Going Celebration was held Sunday, Oct. 10, at Friendship Memorial Cemetery for Scott.
