'Incredible' harmonies power South Bend band Girl Named Tom to next round of 'The Voice'

Tribune Staff Report

The siblings in the South Bend group Girl Named Tom once again stunned the celebrity judges of "The Voice" with their harmonies, earning a win that moves them to the next round of the TV singing competition.

Music star Kelly Clarkson, the coach of the group's team, picked Girl Named Tom as the winner of the "battle" round and raved about their singing.

In a performance that aired Monday night on NBC, the Liechty family trio sang "Seven Bridges Road" by the Eagles, with a country twist, alongside their opponent, solo artist Kinsey Rose.

The performers received a standing ovation from Clarkson and the other celebrity coaches.

In the battle round of "The Voice," artists on the same team perform a song together, with their coach picking a winner to advance to the next round.

"I picked Girl Named Tom because that family harmony is so incredible and it's so tight," Clarkson said on the show. "There's just something special about it."

The acoustic pop trio features Caleb, 26, Joshua, 24, and their sister, Bekah, 20.

"That was the most fun we've ever had on a stage!!!" the group tweeted after the show aired Monday night.

The siblings are originally from Pettisville, Ohio, but they moved to South Bend last year because Joshua’s girlfriend is an Indiana University medical student in South Bend. Another local connection: Caleb and Joshua both graduated from Goshen College.

Girl Named Tom has released three albums independently, posted several videos on YouTube and toured nationally.

As for the group's unusual name, the brothers have said they referred to Bekah as "Thomas" when she was a baby because they were hoping for a younger brother at the time.

“The Voice” airs at 8 p.m. Mondays and Tuesdays on NBC.
