LOS ANGELES — Pettisville-based singing group Girl Named Tom won their Battle Round Monday night on NBC’s “The Voice,” allowing them to continue their quest to win the show’s top prize.
The sibling trio made up of Josh, Bekah and Caleb Liechty took on fellow teammate Kenzie Rose, a country singer. The match up was chosen by pop singer Kelly Clarkson, who was the coach for all of them.
“That was the most fun we’ve ever had on a stage!!” Girl Named Tom (@GirlNamedTom) tweeted out after the performance.
Prior to the singing battle, Clarkson brought in country singer Jason Aldean to work with the artists to prepare them for the contest. The song she chose for them to sing together was “Seven Bridges Road” by The Eagles.
Following the battle, coach Blake Shelton said it was too close for him to pick a winner, while coach Ariana Grande said she gave a slight edge to Girl Named Tom.
Coach John Legend said he felt more connected to Girl Named Tom, but also pointed out Kenzie Rose sounded “like the best soloist.”
In the end, it came down to Clarkson making the decision to keep Girl Named Tom.
However, she also got to keep Rose thanks to the save offered to coaches, despite Shelton and Legend trying to steal the country artist.
Girl Named Tom will now move on, along with any other artists chosen by Clarkson during the Battle Round, to the Knockout Round, in which they will face another team member or group.
Unlike the Battle Round, in which the artists battling each other sang the same song at the same time, during the Knockout Round one artist or group will sing while the other waits their turn. The artists also get to choose their own songs rather than have one chosen by the coach.
If Girl Named Tom makes it through the Knockout Round, they will then perform during the show’s live performances, which are then voted on by the audience.
