Gareth Bale has told reporters he is still the "best golfer" at Real Madrid while speculation mounts that Newcastle United are planning a huge move to sign the Welsh winger.

In the wake of Newcastle United's incredible £300 million Saudi takeover last week, Bale is set to be right at the top of the Magpies tree ahead of next summer.

The Toon are now the richest football club in the world.

But at the age of 32, Bale's football career remains uncertain, with some reports claiming the former Spurs star will soon be hanging up his boots in favour of pursuing a golf career.

Bale has made it no secret about his passion for golf, posting regularly while out on the course on his Instagram page.

He has even built a number of iconic golf holes in his back yard.

Bale has used the services of Southwest Greens to design par-3 replicas of the 12th at Augusta, Royal Troon's Postage Stamp and TPC Sawgrass' iconic Island Green 17th.

"I had a lovely bit of land here and it was something that I really wanted to do and I decided that I would love to make a dream come true and build a mini golf course in my house," said Bale.

He also signed a deal to play with TaylorMade Golf clubs earlier this year. Check out his latest golf social media post below:

Bale believes he is easily the best golfer at Real Madrid - not that it is difficult given keeper Thibaut Courtois is the only other interested player.

But even if more players were keen for a spot of golf, Bale would still likely be the best given he is supposedly a 3-handicap player.

Bale was speaking to the media as he watched home favourite Rafa Cabrera Bello win the Open de Espana on Sunday.

"There are only two of us playing golf in the Real Madrid dressing room, so without a doubt I'm the No 1 golfer on the team," Bale told SPORT

"Thibaut Courtois is the other one who plays, but he's not better than me."

While the golf courses in and around Madrid are certainly reason enough for Bale to remain in Spain for the time being, it's fair to say his relationship with the Spanish press has been a rocky one during his eight-year spell.

Bale once posed after an international game with a Welsh flag that read: "Wales. Golf. Madrid. In that order."

The Welsh winger is currently out on the sidelines nursing a hamstring injury, meaning he has been forced to miss out on some crucial World Cup Qualification games for his country.

Should Bale end up at Newcastle he will have some fantastic choice for golf, especially at Close House, which hosted the 2020 British Masters won by Renato Paratore.

Newcastle United have not only been linked with signing Bale in the coming months, but also PSG's Mauro Icardi, Barcelona's Philippe Coutinho and Manchester United's Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard.
