DEMING – For the first time this season, the Mountaineers will be playing at home this Friday, Oct. 15.
The team has played five straight away games to start the 2021 season, managing a 3-2 overall record. They also played their first in-conference game of the year last Friday, Oct. 8, defeating Nooksack Valley 40-34.
Davin Beason, Mount Baker’s senior linebacker and center who is now running the offense at quarterback, said the team was going to find a way to play their allotted games no matter what.
“We had three or four cancellations, so we were just getting games,” Beason said. “We didn’t care if we were travelling five hours, we’re playing,”
Their trip to Everson on Friday was a welcome change in travel distance. The Mountaineers have played two games south of Seattle and one in Wenatchee.
The rest of their scheduled contests will be in-conference, with only one being on the road at Lynden Christian.
Ron Lepper, Mount Baker’s head coach and athletic director, said they were going to take what they could get. However, they are excited to return home.
“We’re not going to make excuses, that’s just the way it is, but we wanted the kids to play,” Lepper said. “We just wanted to play and get better, and I’m just so proud of those guys hanging together.”
Mount Baker has now won two in a row, thriving offensively with a strong rushing attack from senior running back Jesse Sande. He rushed for a career-high 232 yards to go along with three touchdowns in the Mountaineers’ victory over Nooksack Valley.
It was also their best overall offensive performance of the season, totaling 476 yards as a team.
Defensively, the Mountaineers effectively contained the Pioneers’ dynamic quarterback-running back duo of Joey Brown and Jordan Silva. They had seven sacks as a team, led by sophomore defensive lineman Vance Lawrence who recorded 2.5 on his own.
“It’ll be nice next week, knock on wood that we don’t have any issues,” Lepper said. “It’s going to be nice to have a home game and play in front of a home crowd.”
The Mountaineers will host Blaine (4-1 overall, 2-0 league) for the long-awaited homecoming.
“It’s going to be crazy, a packed house,” Beason said. “It’ll be fun, [it's] homecoming night so we’ve got to put on a show for the crowd.”
