Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya Discuss Their Hopes For a Dune Sequel

The early word on Dune has been largely positive, with several critics praising the performances and its breathtaking visual effects. Unfortunately, when it comes to franchise potential, good reviews can only carry the film so far. There’s no guarantee that a sequel will happen. But even though it’s still early, Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya are already thinking about what they want to see in a second installment.

Chalamet and Zendaya shared their hopes for a sequel during a recent interview with Collider. And if Chalamet gets his way, all future Dune entries will continue to place emphasis on character over spectacle.

“For me, don’t lose the humanity,” said Chalamet. “I love Denis’ focus on retaining the humanity. The need for it, or else some quality’s lost. So I think that’s important for me when I think about a potential sequel. That’s something to keep in mind.”

Zendaya went on to acknowledge that the path forward is all laid out in Frank Herbert’s novels. It also sounds like she’s looking forward to doing more stunt work in the sequel.

“It’s also one of those things where it’s like, the books exist,” added Zendaya. “So we know what’s to come. It’s teasing you, you’re like, ‘oh, there’s so much more cool things to do,’ you know? But I would say I enjoyed getting into the physicality of the Fremen people. And I think what’s really cool, especially about the fight choreography, […] is that each house kind of has their own very distinct style and even their own distinct style of fighting and moving, [depending] upon what planet you’re from or what house you belong to. So for me, it was cool to really see that distinction.”

Dune hits theaters and HBO Max on October 22.
