Today he might be known for his role in the studio, but years before that Chris Sutton was a Celtic player. And he was a brilliant one at that. He scored more than 80 goals for the club and formed a legendary partnership with Henrik Larsson up top.

His time at the club did not come to the end that he or most of the fans would have expected though. Gordon Strachan arrived as manager in the summer of 2005, succeeding Martin O’Neill.

Sutton’s appearances would become more sporadic after that, although it must be said that there were concerns about his fitness as well. Not too long after, the striker would be gone from the club, joining Birmingham City in January of 2006 on a free transfer.

Now, Sutton has lifted the lid on his time at Celtic with Strachan as manager and has admitted that he was angry with him. While speaking on Open Goal and as reported by 67 Hail Hail, he said:

"“I never wanted to leave Celtic. Not even when Strachan came in. I was happy carrying on. New ideas, new methods, that’s fine. I didn’t necessarily have an issue with Gordon up until the first day.“I injured my cheek, it was a bad injury. My vision was impaired. We had a disagreement about that.”"

The former Celtic star also added:

"“I was angry with him.“I was sitting upstairs one day and he was talking to me, he started to try and joke. I just ignored him and carried on eating my soup. Then we had a conversation in his office. He asked what that was all about and that ignoring him wasn’t on. I told him he ignored me for six weeks. He said he called me. We agreed to disagree because he didn’t call me. We got on and it was fine after that.“Then he pulled me in before Christmas and said he wanted to change the terms of my contract. I said if you want me leave, I’ll leave but if you want me to stay those are the terms. He said I’d been injured a lot. There wasn’t a lot I could do about that. In the end, we fell out.”"

Sutton departed Celtic months after Strachan’s arrival as manager

Sutton had had a decent if not spectacular 2004/05 campaign before the arrival of Strachan as manager. By the time he would leave Celtic in January of 2006, he was 32 years of age.

He would later go on to play for both Birmingham City and Aston Villa. But it must be said that he did not achieve great success at either club. Since then though, he has gone on to enjoy a brilliant career off the pitch.

On the other hand, Strachan would go on to achieve quite some success as the Celtic manager, even winning the Scottish Premier League title on three occasions.

Later on, he would go on to manage the Scotland national team as well and remains involved in football to this day, even having a consultancy role with Celtic.
