A Cop Movie: Release Date, Cast, And More

(Welcome to ...And More, our no-frills, zero B.S. guide to when and where you can watch upcoming movies and shows, and everything else you could possibly stand to know.)

When it comes to documentaries and especially docuseries, Netflix is all-in. The latest addition to their growing collection is the experimental Mexican action film, "A Cop Movie." While the title might sound like a parody or full on action-packed chaos, it's actually an insightful deconstruction of the Mexican police force, told through the voices of two officers. The film experiments with form, part documentary and part narrative fiction, to tell the insane, twisting story of "the love patrol."

Here's everything you need to know about "A Cop Movie."

A Cop Movie Release Date and Where To Watch

"A Cop Movie" is yet another hybrid release: it will be available in select theaters on November 5, while debuting on Netflix that same day. This will be the first chance to catch the film, except for the lucky few who attended its premiere in March 2021 at the 71st Berlin International Film Festival.

What is A Cop Movie?

"A Cop Movie" blends documentary and narrative styles as director Alonso Ruizpalacios explores the world of the Mexican police force. The film tells the story of Teresa and Montoya, a couple and police duo known as "the love patrol." Both join the force to follow family traditions, but quickly find their hopes crushed by the  dysfunctional system. The experimental film sees two performers reenacting the lives of the duo, while they themselves narrate the tale. Experimental in form, "A Cop Movie" lets Ruizpalacios mess with the boundaries of non-fiction as he dives into one of the world's most controversial institutions.

A Cop Movie Cast

A mix between documentary and narrative fiction, "A Cop Movie" sees its two main characters played by both actors and real people. Raúl Briones stars as Montoya and Monica Del Carmen as Teresa, though both performances are accompanied by voiceovers from the actual people the "characters" are based on. Briones is best known for his role in various Spanish-language tv series, including the Amazon Video romance series "The Vineyard." Del Carmen is best known as the lead from 2010's "Leap Year," which won the Camera d'Or at the 63rd Cannes Film Festival.

A Cop Movie Director, Writer and More

"A Cope Movie” comes from Mexican director Alonzo Ruizpalacios, who made his debut in 2015 with "Güeros." That film, which he also wrote, won five Ariel Awards including Best Picture, and was followed up with Ruizpalacios' 2018 heist drama, "Museum." It played at the 68th Berlin International Film Festival, where it took home an award for Best Screenplay. "A Cop Movie" is Ruizpalacios' third feature film. He collaborated on the script with David Gaitá. "A Cop Movie" is executive produced by Daniela Alatorre ("Midnight Family") and Elena Fortes ("Vivos").
