In his fifth season with the Devils franchise, defenseman Colton White is pushing for an opening night roster spot with the big club. With several defensemen out, including Damon Severson and Ty Smith, this could be White's chance.
"There's some injuries right now and each guy has to do their job and take control or advantage of their opportunity," White said following the team's final training camp practice.
Although the blueliner has participated in training camp before, this year has been his strongest showing.

"It's the longest I've ever been here, throughout my time with training camp," White said. "There's been a couple sleepless nights, just waiting to see where you land. But at the end of the day you can't think about that, you just have to show up and try to get better each day and go about your job."
What does White want to show his coaches and teammates when it comes to what he could contribute?
"I just wanted to play my game, and that's a simple game," White said. "Moving pucks up the ice and also being good in the defensive zone. Just showing the coaches I can be trustworthy on the ice and play a good, dependable game.
"Over the past few years I've been up and down between the AHL and here, and I think each time I've gotten better throughout the games I've played. I've just tried to get better every day."
On a team with a revamped defensive core, Colton White is learning from free-agency acquisition, Dougie Hamilton. After playing with him and observing him throughout camp, White has some things he would like to emulate with his own game.
"The one thing is off the ice is how much he cares about everyone around the room. First and foremost. And then how detailed he is," White said. "In-game just how simple he is. He moves pucks extremely well. Gets pucks to the net and creates a lot of offense that way. He's also a big, rangy guy who ends a lot of plays with his stick and uses his body well to defend. He's obviously an elite player."
