Tyrann Mathieu says the Kansas City Chiefs defense has been “embarrassing” this season.

At 2-3 through their first five games of the season, Kansas City Chiefs star safety Tyrann Mathieu finds the team’s defense to be “embarrassing”.

While the defense caught fire in the second half of last year, this year’s regression is more proof that defenses are a year-over-year proposition. How a team plays on that side of the ball in one campaign does not carry over to the next. The good news for the Chiefs is they have plenty of time to right the ship. However, this defense will be what holds the team back from winning the AFC.

Frankly, the Chiefs need better play out if its defense if they want to even be a Wild Card team.

The other part of Mathieu’s quote that is significant is the Chiefs are still getting everyone’s best effort. When a team wins its conference in back-to-back seasons, this is what is expected. Even though the Buffalo Bills are an elite team, everybody plays up when they take on the Chiefs these days. While it could change if the team continues to fade, they need to respond through adversity.

This team’s best ball has to be ahead of it. Otherwise, it could be a long year for Chiefs Kingdom.
