When it comes to Timothée Chalamet, it doesn’t take much to make the internet swoon. And the actor knew exactly what he was doing when he gave us the first sneak peek at his upcoming role as Willy Wonka

On October 10, Timothée posted a dashing pic of himself in full costume on the set of Wonka, the movie that will show us the character's origins in-depth for the first time. “The suspense is terrible, I hope it will last…" he captioned the photo on Instagram.

In his post, the actor looked mysterious and focused behind the camera wearing a velvet burgundy jacket, a silk necktie, and Willy Wonka’s iconic brown top hat. It is a dapper debut for the character and Hollywood’s favorite heartthrob looked every bit the part wearing a period ensemble envisioned by costume designer Lindy Hemming.

Following his social media reveal, images of Timothée dressed in costume while filming on location in England also started circulating online (which you can check out above) — and, of course, so did the memes.

While most of us learned about Timothée's new role back in May, it seems like news of the actor's casting hadn't spread quite that far and his own post was not only a confirmation but an announcement of sorts for many. “can’t separate meme from reality I thought Timotheé Chalamet playing willy Wonka in a musical was A JOKE,” tweeted one user. Others used an image of Violet Beauregarde from the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory film to illustrate their surprise.

Even Timothée himself jumped on the meme bandwagon retweeting a hilarious fan edit that used the "Oompa Loompa Song" from the 1971 musical film, Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, and the now-infamous "Timmy Tim "video

All jokes aside, Timothée is only the third Hollywood actor to take on the role of the eccentric chocolate factory owner based on Roald Dahl’s 1964 tale Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. It’s a childhood favorite for many and was famously played by Gene Wilder in 1971 and Johnny Depp in 2005. The new movie is officially set to release in 2023, so keep your fingers crossed for more behind-the-scenes pics (and memes) before it hits the big screen.
