Since its inception, the Guardians of the Galaxy have always been portrayed as D-list characters in the comics but that all changed when Marvel Studios took a gamble on them in 2014 with the help of director James Gunn. Literally, not a single fan saw it coming but the original Guardians of the Galaxy film exceeded expectations and would later become one of the MCU's hottest properties.

The team's popularity only grew exponentially through the years but surprisingly enough, one character from the Guardians franchise took the lead as the most popular character by the time Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 was already screening in theaters. According to data released by Gunn on Twitter, Dave Bautista's character Drax the Destroyer consistently topped every screen test and exit poll.

The director of DC's The Suicide Squad revealed the surprising information after a fan told him to just kill off Drax as fans aren't going to care anyway. Welp, I guess he was wrong with his assessment. Check out the tweet below:

I have to admit, I'm a bit stunned with the idea of Drax being but I can totally see why he clicked so much with the fandom. For starters, he's easily one of the funniest, if not the funniest member of the group, and his backstory is quite compelling as well that you had no choice but to root for him and see him succeed.

It's an absolute shame though that Drax was oftentimes presented as comic relief when we all know that he has the potential to be a huge player in the MCU. Here's to hoping Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 changes that.

The MCU's third Guardians film is scheduled for release on May 5, 2023.
