The Buck stops here?
USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reports former New York Yankees manager Buck Showalter “is high on the Padres’ short list. The other leading candidates include former Tigers manager Brad Ausmus, former Blue Jays manager John Gibbons and former Rangers manager Jeff Banister.”
The Padres are looking for a new skipper after parting ways with Jayce Tingler. He became the fall guy for the Padres’ supremely disappointing 2021 season, which saw them miss the playoffs despite adding pitchers Blake Snell, Yu Darvish and Joe Musgrove to a core which includes sluggers Manny Machado and Fernando Tatis, Jr.
San Diego had expected to content for the National League West division title, but finished in third place, 28 games behind the San Francisco Giants. The Padres also finished 11 games back in the National League Wild-Card race.
Showalter also has been mentioned as a possible replacement for Aaron Boone if Yankees general manager Brian Cashman decides to go in a different direction in the dugout following New York’s Wild-Card loss last week to the Boston Red Sox.
Showalter endeared himself to Yankees fans this year as a studio analyst on YES Network. He managed the Yankees from 1992 to 1995, setting the stage for the late 1990s dynasty. Showalter later managed the Arizona Diamondbacks, Texas Rangers and Baltimore Orioles. In 20 years as a big-league skipper, he’s won 1,551 games
