Stokes returned to play 11 weeks after the fracture, but the operation proved unsuccessful and impaired his ability to bat. It was a factor in him taking a break not long after captaining England’s 50-over team against Pakistan.
He is unlikely to be match-fit for at least a month and he remains on an indefinite break from the game to protect his mental health.
