It might have been a while since we last legged it home from school to watch ‘Neighbours’, but the fact that the long-running Aussie soap is planning a London set special still fills us with a certain kind of retro glee.
The spesh will be screened next year and feature the one and only Amanda Holden in a starring role. Holden will play Harriet, the aunt of Harlow Robinson, who is played by actor Jemma Donovan and is Paul and Gail Robinson’s granddaughter, for anyone reading this post from the 1990s.
Holden's Harriet is the sister of the late Prue Wallace, who was played by Denise van Outen and died last year in the show after a shock bombing storyline, which is just about as wild and soap-y as it gets. Harlow and Harriet will team up to solve a family mystery about Prue. A moment please for the Neighbours team actually naming a British character Prue. Tres iconique.
Speaking about the role, Amanda Holden has said: ‘Like most people in the UK who were around in the late '80s, early '90s, I grew up watching Neighbours every single day of the week. I was glued to our TV for the wedding of Kylie and Jason, while cursing Mrs Mangel and praying that Mike and Jane would eventually get together! Not to mention all the other greats over the years.’
She added: ‘To now have the opportunity to be a part of such an iconic Australian show is simply fabulous. I can't wait to work with Jemma in London. This feels like a joyous occasion for everyone.’
