While companies like Oppo are pushing for extreme charging speeds in excess of 100W, 3C certification for Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy S22 indicates that the Korean giant will be sticking to a more pedestrian 25W charging for the upcoming flagship.

According to a 3C certification report shared on WCCFTech, the Samsung Galaxy S22 will reportedly stick with 25W charging speeds. The SMS9080 (the model number for one of the Galaxy S22 variants) will charge at 9V by 2.77 Amperes, for 25W. To put this in perspective, phones like the OPPO R17 Pro charge at 50W, going from 0 to 100 percent in under 40 minutes.

It’s relevant to note here that the current-gen Samsung Galaxy S21 lineup also features 25W charging meaning that we won’t be seeing substantial improvements as far as charging speed is concerned.

The question, then, is whether 25W charging will significantly hamper the user experience on the S22 lineup compared to competing hardware.

The answer isn’t quite as cut and dry as it’d appear. While OPPO, Xiaomi, and other Chinese brands are pushing extremely high-speed charging, diminishing returns mean that the actual improvement to user experience is marginal at best while overheating from ultra-fast charging can mean significantly reduced battery lifespan. To put things into perspective, the 25W charger on the Galaxy S21 5G can go from 0 to 80 percent in 48 minutes, while the 55W Xiaomi Mi 11 manages the same in just 30 minutes.

The Mi 11 is technically over 50 percent faster, but in real-world terms, we’re talking about an 18-minute difference at best. Whether or not that’s worthwhile is a question potential Galaxy S22 owners will need to ask themselves.
