Real Madrid fans know Gareth Bale for a lot of things. He is a club legend who helped Los Blancos reach a new level of dominance, playing a vital role in four Champions League-winning sides, scoring two of the most memorable goals in title matches in the Copa del Rey and one of those Champions League triumphs. They know him as a stupendous athlete, a soft-spoken leader, and, yes, a golf enthusiast.

Bale’s love for golfing is well-known among Madridistas. It sometimes makes him a target of the Spanish press, which is a fact he sometimes leans into. Who can forget his infamous “Wales. Golf. Madrid.” banner? At the time, it upset many fans and apparently the club itself, but, now, it is water under the bridge with Bale back in Madrid.

Currently seeking to return from another hard-luck injury, Bale had scored against Levante and was looking ready to put together a quality season under Carlo Ancelotti.

Bernabeu Digital published an interesting interview with Bale, who was in one of his two natural habitats as an athlete. In this case, he was on the golf course, not the football pitch, at the Spanish Golf Open.

Thibaut Courtois also plays golf

Gareth Bale is the most famous golfer in the Real Madrid dressing room, but he told reporters that he isn’t the only golf enthusiast in the Madridista ranks.

Who is the other golfer? None other than goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois. Bale, of course, says he is better than the Belgian, and that isn’t surprising.

Only two people in Madrid enjoy golf? I wonder if anyone on the coaching staff or among the executives has wanted to test their strengths against Bale.

It’s quite something to be one of the best footballers of your generation but to also excel in a different, totally different sport. We know Bale as an incredible speedster and physical specimen who has the technique to score from anywhere or assist via a cross, but it’s easy to overlook the focus he has and the tools that show up in his golf game.

That same focus, of course, is readily present when watching Courtois. He probably won’t dispute Bale is the much better golfer, but I wonder if he’d cheekily say that he is now the better footballer, given Courtois himself is well on his way to joining Bale on the pantheon of Madrid legends.

In all seriousness, best wishes to Gareth Bale in his recovery. And as much as we made fun of him in 2019-2020 for golfing, it’s admirable how he is able to show his love for both sports!
