Erik Gustafsson released from PTO with the Islanders; expected to sign with former club

In a bit of a shocking move on Sunday evening, the New York Islanders released defenceman Erik Gustafsson from his professional tryout contract. In three games for the Islanders during the pre-season, Gustafsson tallied four assists, and four shots on goal.

Gustafsson won't be without a home for very long. According to TSN's Pierre LeBrun, the 29-year-old is going to be signing with his former team, the Chicago Blackhawks. The Fourth Period's Frank Seravalli added that it will be a one year contract worth roughly $800,000.

The Nynashamn, Sweden native enjoyed some of the best years of his career when he was previously with the Blackhawks from 2015-2020, including a 60 point season in 2018/19.

In 250 career games with Chicago, Calgary, Philadelphia, and Montreal, Gustafsson has 131 points (29 G, 102 A), 71 penalty minutes, and is a -4
